Ein bezeichnender Filmstart: Eine Reihe junger Frauen legt Pfeil und Bogen an und zielt. Darunter auch Erzsi Szőnyi, eine schweigsame Fließbandarbeiterin aus Budapest. Aufgewachsen in einem Waisenhaus, ohne Waise zu sein, will sie jetzt wissen, woher sie kommt. Die Mutter hatte das uneheliche Kind früh „weggegeben“, um zu heiraten. Erzsi macht sie in einem Dorf hinter einem hohen Gartenzaun ausfindig. Die Frauen dort sind gebückte Wesen und tragen schwarze Kopftücher. Der Bauer stellt ihr nach, die Mutter ist auch noch eifersüchtig. Nur mit dem Halbbruder kann sie singen und tanzen unter Obstbäumen. Schon auf der Rückreise schaut sich Erzsi selber unter den Männern um. Bei einer Beatparty im Wohnheim entdeckt sie offenbar den Richtigen. „Es ist der erste Spielfilm von Márta Mészáros. Mehr als zehn Jahre Regiearbeit liegen hinter ihr, seitdem sie ihre Studien als Regisseur auf der Moskauer Akademie für Filmkunst beendete. (...) Einen ihrer schönsten Kurzfilme drehte sie über das Leben in einem Waisenhaus. Die Hauptrolle spielt Kati Kovács, eine der beliebtesten ‚pop-singer‘ Ungarns; mit dieser Rolle gab sie ihr eigentliches Debüt als Filmschauspielerin.“

The film starts auspiciously: a group of young women take up bows and arrows and aim. One of them is Erzsi Szőnyi, a quiet assembly line worker from Budapest. She grew up in an orphanage although she wasn't an orphan. In the film, she decides to find out who she really is and where she comes from. Her mother gave birth to her as an illegitimate child and gave her away to be able to marry. Erzsi investigates what lies behind the high fences in the village. Women there walk around as bent over figures wearing black headscarves. The farmer is after her and her mother, of all possible reactions, is jealous. The only person she can sing and dance under the fruit trees with is her half-brother. On a trip home, Erzsi checks out the men assembled. While at a “Beat party” at a hall of residence, she finds the right guy. “This is Márta Mészáros' first feature film. More than ten years of work were necessary to bring it to fruition, the period after she completed her studies in Directing at the Moscow Academy of Film Arts. … she realised one of her most beautiful films about life in an orphanage.
