Der schon 39-jährige, aber noch jungfräuliche Percy, dessen Kumpels ihm eine Wette aufgedrückt haben, trifft in einer Londoner Strip Bar auf die Animierdame Cyrenne. Von seiner unbeholfenen Art berührt, nimmt Cyrenne Percy mit nach Hause, wo neben zahlreichen befreundeten Nachbarn auch Tauben auf der Dachterrasse und ein Affe im Bett der hübschen Blondine wohnen. Es wird viel geredet und Tee getrunken. Das Gespräch der beiden entwickelt sich zu einer amüsanten Dekonstruktion klischee- hafter Geschlechterverhältnisse, nicht zuletzt durch den allegorischen Rollentausch der beiden Charaktere. Sogar den Abwasch wird Percy mit Begeisterung erledigen.
Ästhetisch eher den 1950er Jahren treu, macht die Regisseurin durch das Sujet den entscheidenden Move in die 1960er. Mit der Thematisierung von Missbrauch in der Familie und weiblichen Abhängigkeiten schlägt Rattle of a Simple Man deutlich ernsthaftere Töne als die früheren Komödien von Muriel Box an. Rattle of a Simple Man war ein Misserfolg und hat die Karriere der erfahrenen Regisseurin besiegelt – nie wieder konnte Muriel Box Filme drehen. (bg)

Percy is already 39 years old, but still a virgin, makes a wager with his mates. Then he meets a B-girl names Cyrenne at a London strip bar. Touched by his clumsiness, Cyrenne takes Percy home with her where, in addition to numerous neighbours with whom she's friends, pigeons gather on the roof. A monkey has also found a place in the pretty blonde's bed. Countless discussions take place and, all the while, the assembled drink one cup of tea after another. The discussion the two of them have develops into an amusing deconstruction of cliché gender roles and an allegorical role reversal. Percy even does the dishes with enthusiasm.
Aesthetically true to a 1950s look, the director pursued her subject with great care in this film as she, both stylistically and in terms of subject matter, broke new ground . By dealing with the theme of abuse within a family as well as situations that make women dependant on having a man around, Rattle of a Simple Man took on more serious subject matter than Muriel Box' earlier work.. Rattle of a Simple Man was a flop and as a consequence, the experienced director behind the project, Muriel Box, was never able to realise another film.
